■ Thamar University adopted a comprehensive set of scientific recommendations to address the scourge of addiction this morning at an official event held in the Academic Development and Quality Assurance Center. The event, held this morning, Tuesday, was dedicated to discussing the final recommendations of the "First Medical Conference of the Faculty of Medical Sciences," themed "Addressing the Challenges of Addiction in Yemeni Society, Reality, Challenges, and Solutions."
This took place under the patronage of the Rector of Thamar University, Professor Dr. Mohammed Al-Haifi, who, in his opening remarks, praised the conference's sound scientific outcomes, describing them as a "fundamental step" in formulating informed national policies.
Professor Dr. Mohammed Al-Haifi affirmed that the university, as a national center of expertise, bears a historical responsibility in addressing societal challenges, stating, "We are working to transform scientific visions into actionable plans, so that Thamar University, as a long-established academic institution in the Republic of Yemen can be a true scientific supporter of the state's efforts in winning the battle of awareness against this scourge."
He added that the conference recommendations represent a "practical reference" based on accurate diagnosis and objective scientific research.
From his part, the Dean of the Center for Academic Development and Quality Assurance, the Academic Vice-Rector of the University, Professor Dr. Adel Al-Ansi, presented a visual analysis linking the conference outcomes to the university's strategy for serving the community.
Dr. Al-Ansi explained that "these recommendations are not merely an academic document, but rather an applicable roadmap, formulated to address realities and offer practical solutions in the areas of prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and legislation."
He emphasized that the center will work to govern the implementation of these recommendations in cooperation with the Faculty of Medical Sciences and relevant entities.
The Dean of the College of Medical Sciences and Conference Chairman, Dr. Adel Emran, presented the concluding recommendations, which were the product of intensive scientific discussions involving a select group of academics, physicians and specialists.
The Conference Chairman outlined the recommendations within six strategic axes, beginning with establishing a knowledge base through the creation of a national center for addiction research and the activation of a national data collection observatory. The second axis focused on building a community-based preventative system that includes integrating awareness into education and strengthening the role of families, religious institutions and the media.
The recommendations also included developing treatment and rehabilitation services by expanding the infrastructure of treatment centers and building the capacity of specialized personnel.
The fourth axis addressed strengthening the legislative and regulatory framework by updating laws and imposing strict controls on the distribution of pharmaceutical products. The recommendations also addressed emerging challenges such as behavioral and digital addiction and proposed sustainable economic alternatives. They concluded with an implementation mechanism based on forming a national committee to monitor implementation, adopting performance indicators and issuing periodic reports to ensure the sustainability of the outcomes.
The conference chairman added that, "We present these recommendations with confidence and responsibility, believing that addressing a complex phenomenon like addiction requires a comprehensive approach that doesn't merely treat the symptoms but delves into the root causes of the social, economic, and psychological problem." He called upon all official and community bodies to
adopt this integrated vision and work as a unified team to achieve the desired national impact.
The event was attended by a distinguished group of academic and official leaders, including the Vice-Rector of the University for Student Affairs, Professor Dr. Abdulkafi Al-Rifai, the Deputy Governor of Dhamar, Mr. Ahmed Ali Al-Dhurani, and the University General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Hutram, as well as Deans and General Secretaries general.
The event also witnessed the notable presence of Colonel Abu Al-Ezz Hamid Al-Mutawakkil, the Head of the Anti-Narcotics Department in Dhamar Governorate, which underscores the strong partnership between the university and the relevant security agencies.
This initiative represents the culmination of Thamar University's efforts to activate its community and research role and a true embodiment of its mission to produce knowledge and direct it towards serving the nation's issues and addressing its most pressing challenges.
